
Here's the Warren Building [NYT via NY Songlines] at Broadway & 20th.Designed by Stanford White and built in 1891, it's been called "one of his worst buildings" by a White expert. Another expert notes its "astonishing facade."
I think it's a really interesting facade, partly because it's been so hard for me to photograph. In the morning it looks dark & poisoned, like it attracts soot and grime, stealing color and fine line from the surface. Its ornamentation looks brittle on the brick, halfway to the cake decoration surface of the Alwyn Court on 58th.
Still, it's easy to believe that a good cleaning would reveal something sublime.
