The Blowout sign above is a beauty, on a former DVD outlet in the bricked-up building at 8th Ave. & 46th St. The pathetic facsimile to the left is on a DVD shop on 37th St. near 6th Ave. And the signs get worse as we climb the ladder of commerce. It's disturbing to see a Global Calorie Delivery System like McDonalds mimic "upscale cafes," as if swank decor and "inspirational word stream" ads like the one below left can somehow mask the scent of frying reconstituted bovine fat patties leaking out the back room.
But no one tops Citibank, whose idiotic ads -- like the huge one below right that wraps around the southwest corner of 6th Ave. & 42nd St. -- ask you to "Write your NYC story," when everyone knows that the luxury economy, banks, and chain stores have erased space for any "NYC story" but their own.
