Magnificent Midtown

(A much more attractive title than the previous "Miscellaneous Midtown"...)  Above, the southwest corner of 5th Ave. & 40th St.  Below l-r: (1) the northeast corner of 5th & 40th, (2) Madison Ave. & 43rd St., (3) 21 W 46th St., (4) looking south over the Transit Authority Bus Terminal from 43rd St.

Above l-r: (1 & 2) the Halloween-convict striped 29-31 W 47th St., (3) the NY Trust Co. Bldg. at 5th Ave. & 57th St., (4) canines guard the entrance to 242 W 30th St.

Above l-r: (1) the odd top of 242 W 30th, (2) a common column set (for its time) atop 1385 Broadway, (3) backside of the Royalton Hotel at 44 W 43rd St., (4) the Madison Belmont Building at 181 Madison Ave.  And finally, below, the Century Association at 7 W 43rd St.

Chrysler Building + Crane

From up Lexington Ave.

6/21/12

Milford Plaza

At 8th Ave. & 44th St.  Not a great building, but they've cleaned it up without (so far) removing all its old-school signs; unfortunately the big M on top is gone, at least for now.

6/4/12

St. Regis 4

Likely the last of my many photos of the St. Regis Hotel, on 54th St. at 5th Ave., since its surface has still not come back to life since they repainted it, before these were taken.

5/23/12

Optical Oddities

Above, an optical facade at 2nd Ave. & 87th St.  Below left, another one at 3rd Ave. & 32nd St.

Above right, an odd alignment of Liberty Tower and a Chase building, from Maiden Lane near Broadway.  Another one below, from 10th Ave. & 40th St., with the green spires of the Church of Saints Cyril & Methodius and St. Raphael in front of an odd earth-toned robot of a building (note the eye holes below the crown).

5/16/12

Holland Tunnel Ventilation

Nothing like a good looking, useful building.

5/14/12

42nd St. Bowery Savings Bank

Above and below left, details on 42nd, across from Grand Central.    Below right, the bank's faded name on the 41st St. backside of the building.  The bank is now a Cipriani catering hall; see a 360 panorama of its interior here.

5/9/12

Marriott Marquis Hotel

At 7th Ave. & 54th St.  The tower above looks like the command center for a future fascist planet, while its entrance, below, is buried under warped plastic advertizing like the rest of Times Square.

4/25/12

Brick Red

Above, PS1 at 21st St. & 46th Ave. in Long Island City.  Below, the Puck Building at Mulberry & Jersey Sts.

4/23/12

Kips Bay Towers

At 1st Ave. & 30th St.  Built in the brutalist style in 1965, but nowhere near as brutal as the plastic boxes thrown up this decade.

Note the way the individual air conditioners soften the brutal grid.

4/11/12

Top 'o the Woolworth

Likely the clearest picture I will ever take of the Woolworth Building.

3/27/12

Bright Day Helmsley Building

The rest of the building looks a little unreal because of the light, but the top, above, looks unreal because it's plastic.

Liberty Tower Light

At Liberty & Nassau Sts.
